Ways to get involved - HighSchool

Transcript of Presentation:

GETTING INVOLVED DURING HIGH SCHOOL:

Getting involved in extra-curriculars not only looks great on college apps, but also helps you find new interests, hobbies and friends!

Ways to get involved:

  1. Clubs: One of the easiest ways to get involved is joining an extra-curricular activity that already exists at your school. Find out what clubs are at your school, and join them!

  2. Create a Club: It can be about anything you like - gardening, music, film making, dancing, identity based orgs (cultural, sexual orientation, first gen, pre-professional), or volunteer clubs based on a cause you are passionate about.

Or bring one of these well-known organizations to your school by starting its first chapter: National Honors Society, Interact Rotary Clubs, California Scholarship Federation, DECA, Model UN, Debate

  3. Volunteer: You can volunteer with local hospitals, animal shelters, libraries , homeless shelters, soup kitchens, local NGOs, environmental clean ups, local campaigns, etc. Even if you don’t know about existing opportunities, inquire at all the places listed above and create some! There's also plenty of national NGOs that are always looking for volunteers. Find a list here.

There are also volunteer opportunities online that let you make an impact from your home. You can find some here and here

  4. Intern: A lot of places that have volunteer opportunities, may also have internship opportunities. Ask local companies, ngos and businesses in your field of interest if they could use an intern to help them with tasks in exchange for learning experience for you, and perhaps even a stipend.

  5. Work: If you need to spend your time on something that earns a financial return, your work will be counted as an extra-curricular. You can try to get promoted from your volunteer or intern job to start making money, or work in typical retail/customer service jobs. You can also start your own small enterprise by designing, writing or selling your own work.

Some more ideas can be found here, here and here.
