ESE’s Expectations
What can I expect as an editor?
Your time commitment is flexible!
You will be able to choose how often you want to review essays by filling out your initial availability on our survey. You will also receive a questionnaire at the beginning of each month that will confirm how much time you can volunteer to the program.
You can also contact our team if your availability has changed.
You will meet with students virtually to ask them about their experiences and passions.
College essay prompts are often very personal; these meetings will help you to know the student a little bit better so you both can consider how to tell their story best
The Extra Set of Eyes Team will provide a guiding list of questions to ask students. You are also free to ask your own.
You will be able to choose what types of essays you want to review.
Students may submit essay sets for the Common Application/Coalition for College Application, University of California System, or for general scholarship applications.
You will be provided the essays in the sets they are submitted.
A set of essays include any essays that must be submitted for any one type of application. This is designed to ensure the student has a holistic review of their application essays. Examples:
The UC application requires a written response to four, personal inquiry questions. An essay set will consist of these four essays.
Universities using the Common Application (Common App) may ask for supplemental essays in addition to the Common App essay questions. If a student is applying to the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), this essay set will consist of the Common App essay and UPenn’s supplemental essay.
If a student is applying to both UCs and UPenn, the essays for each application will be considered a different essay set.
Please take no longer than 7 days to get back to the student.
Please let us know if anything changes so we have time to accommodate our students accordingly.
If you noted any personal identifiers on your application (first generation, low income, etc.), we will try to match you with a student with similar backgrounds or experiences.
